Thanks very much for signing up for Max’s Big Climb - The Race Against Time to end Duchenne muscular dystrophy tomorrow. We really appreciate your support of our event and all the pledges everyone has collected.
A huge thank you must go to Mattamy Homes who have very generously supported our event in 2019 and also to the amazing Peter and Krys from Grupetto - for their tireless help with the race for the 4th year running.
Below is some information to help make tomorrow run smoothly and hopefully answer some questions you might have.
July 20 08:00 AM - Check in at Grupetto opens
July 20 09:00 AM - Check in Grupetto closes
July 20 09:30 AM - Individual time trials begin
Shortly after the completion of the individual time trials, we will hold the Kings and Queens of the Mountain competitions.
- The fastest three riders in each adult age category from the Individual Time Trial will race off in head to head finals to determine our adult age category Kings and Queens of the Mountain.
- The fastest four men and women overall - regardless of age - from the Individual Time Trial will also race off in head to head finals to determine our overall King and Queen of the Mountain for 2019.
We will check in riders at Grupetto at 24 King St W, Dundas from 8:00 am - 9:00 am. At check in you’ll get your race plate and zip ties. Coffee and snacks will be available at Grupetto for purchase.
Racing will start at 9:30 am. Rider’s exact start times for the time trial will be posted after registration closes after 9:00 pm tonight at www.racetiming.ca. You will also be able to see live results during the race here - so please bookmark it on your phone.
Riders who miss check-in may not be able to race, so please be on time to avoid disappointment. If you are late due to circumstances beyond your control, please come to the start line at the corner of Sydenham Road + Crowley Ct before your start time and we will do our very best to accommodate you and get you ready to race.
Please park your vehicle in Dundas and ride up to the course - there is no parking at the lookout and it is very limited near the course. We’d also like to keep the neighbours happy so we can keep running this event.
There is parking available behind Grupetto in a free municipal lot on Hatt Street between Miller and Ogilive. If this is full, there is also a parking lot beside Shawn & Ed’s Brewing at 65 Hatt St, Dundas. Double-check the signs, but I believe both are free on Saturday. The race start line is approximately 800 metres from this area.
The lookout at the top of the climb will be closed to traffic during the race. If your friends or family want to come and watch, they should park above the course just off Glendrummond Drive and walk back down. For safety reasons, we will not be allowing vehicles into the lookout parking lot between 7:00 am and 1:00 pm.
The start line is on Sydenham Road just past Crowley Court. Please come to the start area at least 10 minutes before your posted start time. If you miss your start time we might not be able to give you another.
We will have a holder to keep you upright on your bike if you wish and will have water at the start line and Nuun hydration at the finish line.
We will also have paramedics at the starting area in case anyone needs medical attention.
Sydenham Road has two lanes up the hill. We will have the right hand lane coned off and closed to vehicular traffic.
Please stay to the right of this lane unless you are passing the rider ahead.
Please pass on the left and announce your presence if passing during the individual time trial portion.
Do not go to the left of the cones and enter the left hand lane - this lane is open to traffic and not for racing.
There is no drafting allowed in the individual time trial section of the race. Drafting is only permitted in the head to head races for the age categories and the overall King and Queen of the Mountain competitions.
Once you cross under the MEC arch, please continue riding through the finish line to keep this area clear for other finishers. Please either turn right into the lookout area or ride straight ahead and come to a stop past the chalked area. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU TURN LEFT INTO THE TRAFFIC - EVEN IF THERE ARE NO CARS.
If you wish to head straight back down the hill, make sure you come to a complete stop, look both ways and enter the roadway only when clear. Please be aware that while the racing lane is closed, there is live traffic beside you running both up and down the mountain. Please be very careful when crossing the road.
You can go into the lookout area to check your time, grab some Nuun + cheer on the other riders.
You can check the official times during the race on www.racetiming.ca. The riders and times for the knockout rounds will also be posted here. In addition, we will have a timing board at the top of the hill with the fastest times and KOM + QOM brackets.
We will be presenting the King and Queen of the Mountain age category awards and the overall trophies in the lookout area shortly after the conclusion of the event. We hope that you’ll stick around to cheer your fellow competitors - we’ll have Max’s Big Climb cowbells!
If you have any cycling friends who are on the fence about the race, please let them know that registration is open to 9:00 pm tonight - and we can also accept a limited number of walk up registrations tomorrow morning up until 8:30 am.
If you fundraised or donated $50 or more, you have earned a Max’s Big Climb shirt. We will print these next week and mail them out to you shortly.
We are having a silent auction and bake sale at Grupetto this evening starting at 7:00. The silent auction will close tomorrow after the event - so please swing by and check out the great prizes and tasty baked goods on offer. 100% of proceeds will go to help find a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
Please let me know if you have any questions at all. We are looking forward to a great event tomorrow - and once again thanks for your participation in our event - we really appreciate it!
